Now, we were planning on doing an API integration between our software platform and Salesforce, in such a way that all of our software users become Salesforce Accounts/Contacts - this would include trial customers. I was thinking that as we try to convert these trial customers into paying customers, we could open up an "Opportunity" in that Account and work from there. But I've also seen that perhaps a best practice is to keep trial customers as Leads and only convert them to Accounts/Contacts when they become paying customers. I can see that the pro of this is keeping our Accounts database clean. But do Lead profiles contain the capabilities, etc? If not, we don't want to lose out on the ability to build pipelines and be able to forecast, just because all of our trial customers are in Salesforce as Leads.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Daisy

We'd like to implement some sort of automated system (maybe something like a scoring system) to filter leads that express higher interest and may qualify for a personal touch-point from a sales rep... but I'm not sure what tools are available to me from Salesforce for this type of task.
Previously, I've worked with a marketing automation tool (Marketo) to do this type of scoring but I"m curious to see if Salesforce has its own system.
Also, just for context, our current system will hav an API integration in the reverse order that you described above: the trial sign-up forms create user logins inside our own SaaS product, and then that user profile will either create a Lead in Salesforce or a Contact in Salesforce... depending on how we set it up. So right now, we're just trying to figure out which configuration makes the most sense for our sales process.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
