If using the native SF History tracking mechanism for a field,

can i get sf to extend the 18 months of history which it is purportedly capped at now?

    Marley, In a standard configuration it may not be possible to extend the storage period. Ideally you can schedule a report with the data and archive it in any external database. 

     

    While you can still make an effort in increasing the limit by logging a case to salesforce. They will be in a better position to suggest you.
