If using the Salesforce for mass email the easiest option is to first create a campaign.
Add the leads or contacts you wish to email to the campaign.
When emailing leads go to the leads home page.
When emailing contacts go to the contacts home page.
On the home page for the selected object look in the tools section at the bottom for mass email.
The email wizard will bring you through all the steps.
On the list view creation step, you limit the results to the campaign you created.
Note that the mass email wizard will exclude the following contacts or leads automatically:
1) Email address field is emtpy
2) The email opt out checkbox is checked
3) If bounce notifications are turned on and the email address is marked as invalid.
