Auto Number based on another field

Hi 

 

We have an auto-number rule in effect for assets but we want to change the format of the auto number based on the product name (and in some cases, not have an auto number at all).

 

For example:

 

For PRODUCT A, the autonumber rule in place produces A-00001 (and so on)

 

For PRODUCT B, we would like it to produce: B-00001

 

And for PRODUCT C, we want the field to be left blank

 

Is it possible for salesforce to do this somehow?

    Auto-numbers are not optional. If you have set a field as auto-number, it will auto-populate for all records using the format you provide.   What you describe can only be done with a text field and rules in a trigger to figure out the value for the record.
