Does anyone know Why can't I make the field "Stage" and "Forecast Category" read only for an opportunity page layout.
We are trying to use record types and custom page layouts to restrict who can change certain fields within Opportunities but are finding "Stage" and "Forecast" category cannot be set to read only. When the spanner icon is clicked we are presented with the usual Read Only checkbox but it is greyed and cannot be checked.
All the other Fields in the page layout can be set to read only but it is not the others we wish to restrict. Does anyone know why this is and how to enable the ability to set these fiels to read only?

For future readers, I recently confirmed with Salesforce premiere support that even a VisualForce page cannot hide the field or make it read-only.
I get that it's integral to SFDC, but if we use other fields to trigger changes to that one, does it really matter if its hidden from the end-user or not when it comes to SFDCs internal processes?
My guess is this is one of those possible improvements thats just not on anyone's radar.
