Running a lead history report reveals that each transfer has an identical date and time stamp which suggests that this is a bulk reassignment. The Edited By field is the original lead owner.
What would trigger this mass reassignment to the default lead owner?
The only assignment rule we use is for Web to Lead assignments being placed in queues.

The only causes of submitting to ARules are:
1) a User saves the record and the 'assign using active assignment rule' is checked
2) a User saves the record and a custom trigger submits to the assignment rule
3) a data job of some sort is run that updates the record to cause #1 or #2 to happen
See if you can find some data similarities between the records that got "magically" changed. Maybe they got updated by an outside system (like a Marketing Automation Tool).
