Is campaigns a core field that can't be removed in the page layout for contacts?

I have the Non-profit Starter package installed... on my contact page layout, one of the required fields is "Campaign".

 

I've tried to go to the layout editor, but can't uncheck the "required" box, nor can I delete the field altogether.

 

I don't understand how this could possibly be a system required field, since there are plenty of contacts we have that aren't associated with any campaigns. Is there any way to get around this or remove the requirement?

    Nevermind... I just realized that this was not a Salesforce field to begin with... this was a custom field for contacts that the last administrator created with a "required" value.

     

    So I was able to edit it from the Customize->Contacts->Fields page instead of the Page Layout page I was trying to work with.
