I have added (ref: {recordId}) to my outbound templates which will allow users to forward the replies from their inbox to email to salesforce.  That works fine.

 

My issue is if they want to add an email that didn't originate in salesforce, so it doesn't have the ref number in the body.  I don't want salesforce trying to associate automatically, just put them in unresolved.  Instead the emails are just lost forever.  My settings are below.

    The best solution I have to date is to keep my settings and have the user ensure the (ref: xxxxx) is in the email.  I created a formula field so they can copy/paste.
