In Classic, we can have dashboard as a home page component and that allows user to customize it to make their own selection.
This feature is missing in lightning and this is going to be major challenge for my org. Is their an alternative solution available? How can I retain (or programatically read) current selection of each of the user.

Alternative solution is for them ignore your home page, pick their favorite dashboard - then instruct them on how to add it to the Nav Bar. Then move that tab all the way to the left so it's the first thing that displays.
