I believe you have to use the standard template the first time you create a home page, but then once you create one, you can clone your existing layout. Unfortunately, I have only been able to get this down to two columns declaratively (one wide one on the left and a narrow one on the left), by dragging my components into those main areas, but perhaps the programmatic approach could work instead for more customization.
