So simple and so overlooked. The fields on custom and standard objects that are actually searchable in the global search is horrible. But its easy to fix. Just create a hidden long text field on the object and use a workflow to populate it with data you want to be searchable. I call the field 'searchable' and put one on almost all objects. For instance, I'd like to search on a client name and have all the Contracts appear in the search result.
