In our organization we have currently used Salesforce to register volunteers and memberships. A determined amount is paid every year to count as a member. We have registered them as a "New membership" to create an opportunity and track amount and dates in the section "Membership Information".

No we also plan to start integration donations and recurring donations into Salesforce, but these donations should be handled separately from memberships. By default when a donation is registered this amount sums up to memberships as well. What is the best way to separate donations from memberships, to be able to keep track of them as two different "products"?

I have looked into roll-ups, and I guess that the problem is that the same input fields on the opportunity (like close date) is used both for donations and memberships. Should I create new fields that is only used for memberships (with the corresponding information) to make it work, or is there an easier solution?

And if I create new fields for the membership: How can I add these to the pop-up when creating a new membership from the contact page?

Thanks in advance!

There is a Opportunity record type for Donation and one for Membership so I agree with Terry and Dodi and they should be already set to roll-up as expected assuming you have enabled customisable rollups.
