Disable Automated Contact Record creation during Community Self-Registration?

I've read in Trailhead that when a Community User Self-Registers a Contact is automatically created (see below).  If we are using a Custom Controller for the Self-Registration process that is creating custom User and Contact records, is there a setting or something that we need to set to prevent Salesforce from automatically creating a Contact as well? 

 

I'm asking because we are getting two Contact records on some of our servers.

What Happens When a Customer Self-Registers to Join Your Site?  

When a customer self-registers to join a site, Salesforce does a couple of things behind the scenes.

Salesforce creates a User record and Contact with the information that the registrant provides on the self-registration page.

Salesforce associates the Contact with an Account, in our case, Customers. You created the account earlier as part of setting up your org.

The User record is assigned the Customers profile, that you cloned from the External Identity User profile earlier in this module.

    Hi Wendy,

    Please note that, Every Community User will have both a User record and a Contact Record. All Community Users have profiles. Only Partner Users have Roles.
