How to let user add team member to a peer's record

So we know that the "add" button for Opportunity Team members only shows up if (1) you are the owner of the record, or (2) you are above the owner of the record. That means two users in the same role (peers) can't add team members to each other's records. I'm wondering how hard it would be to build something to get around this problem.

Can I somehow make my own button that calls the same functionality? Or do I have to reinvent the wheel?

    Ok got it go back to the opportunity page after it's done, that's working.

    But now that I'm testing as a user (As opposed to myself, an admin), I see that it's not working for my users. The error below, seems to indicate that it's still blocking my user from doing it because they're not the owner or above the owner? 

    Error Occurred: INSERT --- INSERT FAILED --- ERRORS : (INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_ON_CROSS_REFERENCE_ENTITY) insufficient access rights on cross-reference id
