The reason is that the instructions always will ask you to create a new playground. But the playgrounds also expire very quickly if not used. If I have a developer org, does it take away the fact that I have to create a new org or playground for every superbadge? Or I can use one developer org for all superbadges as I am looking for a way to consolidate my works and not have them scattered in different playgrounds. Any help?

Yes. They would expire. I presume after 180 days of no-login attempt. You will get a warning message before actual expire.
Hence// you can possibly have a self directive to login to such playgrounds once per month. Then you should be fine
