I was able to get a success response from the api but when i checked pardot, the email is there but not sent.

It's looking like you are most likely working with a Pardot Developer Org, or a Pardot Sandbox.
In both of these environments, Pardot does not actually send the email, and I'm pretty sure it also does not show up as Activity when looking at the Prospect.
