Board members who own businesses that make annual donations. I want those donations to roll up to the contact record as a hard credit for the donor to be included in their "Give" for the year.

I was able to do this with soft credits easily enough but can't get there with the hard credits because their is not an option for HC(Contact Roles) when creating the roll up.

With NPSP treating Organization donations as the hard credit entity and the associated Contacts as Soft Credits, I did tinker with an idea to identify the board member's Contact Soft Credits via their own company as a "Give" in a new Contact field, just as an idea to spark discussion or exploration (within a sandbox first!):

    • Created a custom currency field on Contact called "Own Company Giving" (for the new rollup)
    • Added a new Opportunity Contact Role of "Own Company"
    • Within Customizable Rollups, created a new Filter Group where Contact Soft Credit role name In List as "Own Company"
    • Created new Customizable Rollup based on the above, sending the SUM of the total amount matching the above filter to the new Contact field
    • In my example, I tested two different situations:
      • When I added a second Opportunity Contact Role of "Own Company" to an existing donation, the soft credit was included in the existing soft credit rollups out of the box and in my new "Own Company Giving" one (as a way to report on that separately)
      • When I added only 1 Opportunity Contact Role of "Own Company" on a different donation, the soft credit only went to the new "Own Company Giving" rollup field. (Thus, *some* admins might decide to add the "Own Company" option within the Filter Groups for soft credits.

There is a "Always Roll Up to Primary Contact Role" setting that would accomplish hard crediting an Organization Account and its Primary Contact, but the NPSP documentation mentions it is not best practice for most scenarios.
