When filling out the NPSP data import template, the "Red Header Text" indicates it's a required field. For many of my contacts, I do not have an "Account1"(red header text) associated with the person/people.

When it says "required" it means if you want to import a record, in this column's case, an Account, then you need to have Account1 Name filled in. You'll notice the same on Contact1 Last Name, Contact2 Last Name, and some other column headers. This is because in Salesforce, you can't import a Contact without the last name, and you can't create an Account without a Name. There may be other fields in your system you have made required, but if this template is a starting point for someone importing to NPSP right out of the box, then it is just denoting the fields that are required as a standard in any org.

So, don't populate those fields if you don't intend to import an Account, but if you do, ensure you have those fields filled in, or a record will not be created.
