Hi Hazel,
The ability to edit a record is not affected by which record types are available to the profile - that is a common misconception. The only thing this affects is whether a user can create a record with this record type, or change an existing record TO that type.
It sounds like you might have a sharing issue, which is more to do with roles than profiles. If you open Sharing Settings, are leads defined as public read/write? If not, then you may be lacking any reason to grant record-level access to this record, like sharing rules.
