I created an Opportunity Validation Rule that produces and error message when someone attempts to create an Opportunity on an Account marked as Inactive.

Is there a way to fire off the error message before someone spends time entering information into the Opportunity fields?

Thanks!

Also, Jody - if you aren't already using record types on accounts, this would be a great use case.

You could have 2 record types - Active and Inactive. On the 'inactive' record type, you could point to an 'inactive' page layout - which has the removed the 'new' button from the opportunities related list.

If you're already using record types for accounts, you could remove the standard 'new' button from the opportunity related list and add a custom new javascript button that checks the status of the account and displays an error message if status isn't 'active'. (This is assuming you are in classic, not lightning).
