Change values in name field on custom object

Does anyone know if it's possible to update the name field on a custom obejct? I'm trying with the dataloader and not seeing 'name' as a field to update. It's an auto number field. Thanks.

    You can change the "Data Type" from Auto-Number to Name and then update it that way. If it is auto-number then there is no way to update it.

     

    If you want to change it back to Auto-Number when you are finished with your changes you can; just be sure to set a new 'starting' number so you don't run into any duplicates.
