Profile with Edit permission on object unable to update a field

We have a profile that has Read,Edit & Add permissions on the Opportunity but when a user with this profile attempts to amend a field they get a permission error. Has anyone seen this before?

    Hi Peter, have you checked if the field has been marked as read-only from the page layout?
