I would like to know some best practices around tracking the source of our leads.

Currently, we have several established "partnerships" that feed us a lot of leads. I have been implementing those in Salesforce under the Partner section.

We also have other companies that will occasionally refer us a lead, but we haven't established any formal partnership with.

What are the advantages/disavantages of using the partner role section vs. simply adding "Partner" under Lead Source and listing the company's name under "Lead Source Detail"?

Thanks

@Brian : If you need Partners for just tracking purpose it is recommended to use Lead/Account Source so that you can use them in the reports . If you have another Partner object , then you have to go for a custom report type and then build a report . But if your requirement is more than just tracking , like you need to save the details about Partner (Although you can have a section on Lead itself for storing the Partner details) or any other complex requirement then you can go for Partner Role section .

Let me know your thoughts and requirements on this .
