How to attach a note to a record in salesforce1

I purchased a single user license a year ago and have not used this CRM much. My client base is hetic and I'm starting to use it more. Before Salesforce1 I believe I recall that when you have a record open you could either click on the X and add a note or scroll right and see add a task or note and so on. Now I can't figure out how to add a note, it says somethig to the effect to verify that you have the edit task or note. How do I do this? I'm sure its something very simple that I'm over looking.

    The first thin you will want to ensure is that you have the 'New Note' publisher action available on the page layout for any object you are wanting to add a note to:

    The second thing you will want to ensure is that you have  Edit  access to the record you want to add the note to. Seeing that you are the only user in your org, you are probably a system administrator and do not need to worry about this, but you may want to ensure that you are the owner of the record you want to add a note to.
