We run a nightly extract of data from a few objects using the Apex Data Loader (scheduled via Tivoli); our point-of-sale system references the data.  When something goes wrong (e.g. the running user's password gets reset) the extract returns an empty file.  However, since there is a file, no alerts get raised...so I only find out when the data the point-of-sale system references is so out of date that it causes issues.

Is there something I can add to the process-conf file that will kill the process or otherwise raise a red flag that our system will notice so I can get alerted the same day instead of two months later?

You are right, you can't change the DL behavior.  Since you are using a scheduled task, maybe you can use a BAT or CMD file and examine the results file and make a go/no-go decision.
