Display phone number based on contact lookup

We have a custom object that is not linked to the contact object. However, we want to display contact name and phone number in the custom object based on a lookup of the contact name. I have already created the lookup field and can choose the name of the contact, but I do not know how to populate or display the contact phone number next to the lookup field.
