Referred and referred by help

 I've set up on contacts and leads a simple lookup field Referred by that links to the contact that referred the lead or contact.  I want to make sure that I have it set up correctly.  I created a custom link on leads, Referred by and one on Contacts Referred by.  When I convert a lead with it work?

 

Secondly, how to I add to a contact a way to see who they referred?

    You have to be sure that your fields Referred by (Leads) and Referred by (Contacts) are linked - you can view this in Setup | App Setup | Leads | Fields | and then click on the "Map Lead Fields" button (at the top of the custom fields section). Then check to make sure that the field "Referred by" shows "Contact.Referred_by" (or whatever you have named your field).

     

    In order to see who the contact referred you could run a Contact report and group by your Referred by field.
