Data Loader: 15 vs. 18 character IDs for updating records

I need to update a couple thousand Account records.  However, the original data export we used from Salesforce has the 15 digit case sensitive ID.  I know that if you treat these as case insensitive, then there are "duplicates".  (Friggin' Excel being case insensitive for it's pivot tables revealed this.)

 

Now I need to upload the updated records back into Salesforce.  I know Data Loader exports the 18 character ID.  If you Update using a 15 character ID, is Data Loader smart enough to know that it needs to treat them as case sensitive?

    As long as you maintained the 15 char ID in the original Upper/Lower Case format the Dataloader should match the records with no problems.
