I understand it's advisable to rebuild Classic dashboards in Lightning. Would the Classic reports also have to be rebuilt? Or can we use the original Classic report to create the new Lightning Dashboard?

you can still use the Classic reports as a base for your Lightning dashboard. As best practise, I'd follow about instructions (clone the original dashboard), keeping in mind that if you're using the feature to display report charts in the dashboard, you may think about switching to Lightning dashboard component instead.
