I was told via a coworker there may be forced move to Lightening and we may loose our files and attachments. I am not a SF expert and fairly new to this company. Would like to understand if that is a real risk or moving forward files and notes are just treated differently

@Suzanne Wells , Notes and Attachments are now more robust in Lightning and become Enhanced Notes and Salesforce Files. While they are different objects, they can be utilized by your users in Classic.
We also have a tool called the Magic Mover for Notes and Attachments on the AppExchange to migrate all of your existing Notes and Attachments to enhanced Notes and Salesforce Files!
