Opening URLs is our only use case for Javascript Buttons currently. We do this on a list view to open URLs in bulk. Do I understand correctly that a Visualforce button would be able to replace this? #JS_Alternatives

Please try using quick actions or the Lightning Data Service to create a new record with field values from the current record you are on.
