Accounts "Private" and Contacts "Controlled by Parent"

So I'm new to communities (so I'm learning)...but right now I'm trying to figure out why my community test user is not able to view ANY contacts. So I've created a sharing rule for the account that I want contacts to be visible under. But due to the fact Accounts OWD is set to Private, I can't change Contacts to Public/Ready Only - am I totally having a blonde moment or isn't this the only way to give them access to the contacts that reside under the account I've just shared with their user?

    Hi Stefanie,

     

    If I understand properly,you should be able to add contact sharing rules for the contact you want to share,this will drectly share contacts either on owner or criteria based sharing rule.

     

    Let me know in case of any issue
