The latest feature released by Tableau, "Multi-Fact Table Analysis", has a published data source, but an unknown error occurs when the external workbook links to the data source. For example, performing a date filter and selecting relative dates will result in the following error:
Unexpected error. An unexpected error occurred. If you still receive this error, please contact your Tableau Server administrator. Session ID: 5AAAEE1417244DE9A94D76F505F5AA5A-0:0 Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'caption')
But if the data source is embedded in the workbook, it works normally. Has anyone encountered this situation?

In general terms, your datasources should reside on the same platform - in the case here it sounds like you have a dataset on Tableau Server, then are connecting to a local dataset (usually Tableau will set this up in a temp directory). This will only ever operate while you are in the 'living instance' in that desktop - What I mean by this is if you close your desktop, you would need to reconnect to these datasets in order to continue to work on them.
To get around this, better practice would be to upload your additional dataset to server, then connect to it there. This will setup both datasources coming from Tableau Server, if you closed down the instance of Tableau Desktop, both of these datasources would continue to be published on Tableau Server and remain accessible to other products.
There is probably a bit more behind the scenes but you didn't note anything else in your original post that warranted a deeper dive so I'll leave it there.
