An organization I'm working with would like to integrate a dashboard created in Tableau Public with a flat Excel file into Salesforce (which they already have) and connect it to live data. I'm assuming they will need a subscription to Tableau Creator (including Desktop and Online or Server). I'm not familiar with Salesforce and am wondering what else they need to know, such as:

  • Does it work similarly to replacing data in Tableau where you instruct Tableau on which measures and dimensions in the new dataset should replaced specific measures and dimensions in the old data set?
  • I read that Salesforce data can only be brought into Tableau as an extract. But perhaps this information is out of date. If not, what is the process for refreshing the data?
  • I also read that with “Customize Application” permissions, you can create a new web tab to add to your navigation bar in Saleseforce that links to a specific dashboard or folder. Is this still the case?
  • What else should this organization consider?

Thanks!!

First two points - yes, provided they stand up a single-user instance of either Tableau Server or Tableau Online to host the content that will be displayed in Salesforce.   You might need MORE than one user/license, though, as you probably don't want to use a Creator-level license to display the content.  You'd want a lower-privileged user account or at least one that you could configure to have lower permissions.

As for the third point, probably.  That's outside my area of expertise but people do it all the time.  Just not me!
