I want to use the leads object to organize our data, but I don't like the limited number of contact information fields that the leads object comes with out-of-the-box (one email address, one phone number, etc.). It seems to make more sense to me that the contact information fields for a lead should be identical to the contact information fields for a contact. I'm considering creating custom fields on the leads object to match more closely with the contact object, but I also appreciate that there is probably a good reason the leads object was created as it was (simplicity is the only thing I can imagine).

Can anybody provide guidance on whether it's a bad idea to customize the leads object so a lead record looks more like a contact record? Thanks in advance!

Many people convert leads early on so you don't have a lot of information on them and you add to it after they are a contact.  I had an org where we would keep someone a lead for a while and had a lot of custom fields.  Assuming you will convert the lead to a contact then you just have to keep up with the lead/contact field mapping.  https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sf.admin_lead_patient_field_mappings.htm&type=5
