Using Appeal Codes for Solicitations (Campaigns)

Does anyone use appeal codes or source codes for tracking responses to a soliciation appeal (i.e. for printing on a BRE)? This is how we've tracked appeal responses in the past, and plan to create a custom field on the Campaign object for this. Curious if others have taken this approach and how these appeal codes are generated/created in the system? Thanks!
