Jessica Thomas a posé une question dans #Sales And Marketing
Hi All,

Apologies if this seams like a 'dumb' question but I am hoping someone can please explain to me the difference between 'Primary Campaign Source' and 'Lead Source'.

Some info & advise around best practise use of these fields would also be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Jess

Primary Campaign Source is the campaign associated with a lead prior to lead conversion. This value can be manually changed in the lead detail. Additionally, it provides 100% of the amount revenue credit to the specified campaign. The Campaign object is used to track ROI, so when you convert a Lead to a Contact w/ Opportunity that Opportunity is tracked against that Primary Campaign.

Lead Source is a bit more of a qualitative metric. That is not to say that you could not run an Opportunities Report summarizng by Lead Source, rather is not not tracked through the Campaigns object for ROI. Campaigns are really great to use because you have have different levels of Campaigns (think Sky, Cloud, and Ground). The really great thing is that each of the different levels can rollup into each other.

So if you are settings a Primary Campaign on a Lead you would always want to set the Ground Level Campaign maybe "2015.Phone.Billboards.ChicagoAveBillboard"

Here I would set the ChicagoAveBillboard as the Primary Campaign. However, if I wanted to see how all my billboards were doing I would pull up the Parent campaign (Billboards).

I'm a big fan of naming conventions so the ground level campaigns look something like 2015.Phone.Billboards.ChicagoAveBillboard when they are set on the Lead and the Cloud level Campaigns are named 2015.Phone.Billboards, etc

You really don't have the ability to roll up ROI metrics like this with the LeadSource. Hopefully I didn't ramble too much, but check out this post on Campaigns--it really changed the way I think about that object in Salesforce: http://bracketlabs.com/blog/2011/3/14/parent-child-hierarchies-in-salesforce-campaigns.html
