Increasing Picklist Value Limits

Has anyone gotten Salesforce to successfully increase the number of values they can have in a picklist / multi-select picklist? I know you can with other limits, such as roll-up fields. Or if not, anyone have any good workarounds other than just doing multiple picklists or using a lookup field to a custom object?

    You can be the community guinea pig if you would like. Just log a Case. Worst case scenario they say not possible.

     

    It seems though that this is a limit that is more likely to be hard coded than some of the other limits that I know Support will raise. But let us know the outcome.
