When creating a Case or Contact in Lightning experience, if I select record type "A", but the default record type for my profile (System Admin) is "B", then the record is created with record type of "B". Basically Salesforce is not respecting the record type which I have selected, it always goes to the profile default, regardless of which record type is actually selected on record type selection screen. I am experiencing this only in Lightning, in Classic it works correctly.

I found the answer to my own question. When I select record type "A", I'm expecting a standard create page. But there is another record type "C" which uses a VF page. It turns out that if there is any VF override at all, and you are using the Lightning Console (as opposed to Lightning standard app), then there is a Salesforce limitation that interferes with the ability to choose the record type.
