and return the name, email and phone number of a person as listed in a table. is there a way to do this in salesforce. Is there an app that can be adapted?

You could create a custom object and use the SCF as the Record Name/Search Field. Then create additional fields for Name, Email, Phone, etc. and return them via a Formula or a Workflow Rule (depending on what edition of SFDC you're using)
