Once I install salesforce for outlook, I only want the current meetings that have not yet occurred to sync. Is there a way to ensure that past events DON'T sync?

If you are using Salesforce for Outlook you can modify the initial sync data set in the Oulook configuration. Add a date range filter to the configuration and then you can even see what the sample data set looks like for a given user.
