Our company sells annual software subscriptions for a fixed annual fee.  The initial annual fee is determined based on an anticipated amount of usage.  This fixed annual amount can be invoiced in installments (e.g. monthly, quarterly or annually) based on the contract terms.

So first, we need the capability to record the initial sale and set the invoice installment dates and amounts. (e.g. Initial sale on Jan 1 for $1,000 invoiced quarterly - -  invoice amounts of $250 established for 1/1, 4/1, 7/1 and 10/1).  We've been using the Opportunity.Product.Schedule to do so but because that object is not customizable and it has some significant limitations.

Then, during the annual term, the customer can "expand" their license as a result of exceeding the volume of a given usage tier. So, we then need to record the incremental product quantity and associated fee and increment the total future invoice amounts.  (e.g. on 2/1 customer added 1 unit at $12.00/yr/unit (prorated to $11 for the remainder of the annual term), so we need to record and invoice a pro-rated fee 'expansion fee' for $2.00 for the period of 2/1-3/31 and then record the 'expansion fee' of $3.00 in each subsequent installment so that the installment invoices to be issued on 4/1, 7/1 and 10/1 total $253 (the original $250 + the expanded $3) and then adjust the open renewal opportunity such that the anticipated annual amount is now $262.

Note the customer can 'expand' their license multiple times during the annual term, as frequently as once each month.  So this can become quite cumbersome with the objective of having both a historical look back of what was invoiced and a pipeline of what is to be invoiced.

I'm know this is quite common. SalesForce accounts for this somehow when new licensed users are added. I just haven't seen how others handle this.

Thanks Ed, I can't (and don't want to) change the product schedules for a 'closed' opportunity.  Therefore when the expansion happens (which I can identify via a custom field on the opportunity Product) I need to add a new opportunity that has its own product and associated product schedule.  I then need a way to link/associate those two (and eventually multiple) opportunities together and all of their products and product schedules to present on a single invoice.  Thoughts?
