External User Data Upload

Question

I recently heard about a company that is using a link that allows their customers - and non- Salesforce license holders"  to upload information back into said companie's Salesforce instance.   Is this something that is available via an app or is this a cusotm built program?

about what kind of data are we talking about?

The first thing which I connect with is using the Chatter functionality.

You can create groups where you invite customers/partners with a Chatter license (normally you have lots of free ones in your org). There data can be shared.
