Auto-send email template

Question

Can I use a workflow to send an email template based on an event? I want to auto send an introduction email to contacts when a meeting event passes (i.e. one day later) and to do the same to send a survey at other intervals, also based off of a workflow. I see workflow options by event but can not tell the specifics and if a template can be used.
