We're looking to help an organization choose the right approach for identity management with Salesforce.  Specifically, the organization has multiple web services that are external to Salesforce, but the database of record is Salesforce.  They'd like users to login via SSO through any of their multiple web services, be authenticated by an identity provider (I'm thinking Salesforce), and upon effective login, capture information from that now logged-in user's Contact record in Salesforce such as membership level, etc.

Would Salesforce External Identities be the right approach for this?  It seems expensive versus other identity services out there, so I wondered if I was looking in the wrong place for something that really needs to be pretty lightweight.  For instance, I'm not sure if there's a Chatter solution that could fit this use case.

Thanks in advance!
