I have a situation where a custom OrderLineItems object is in production which contains more that 1 million records and i am planning to create & link a new custom object "OrderLineItemsExt" which hold  product related details. The relation betweel these two object is Many-to-One and they are related with a "ProductID" field in both objects. So How do i implement this?.

I tried creating a new lookup field (reference) in OrderLineItems object to reference OrderLineItemsExt object, But the question is how to make this relation to use ProductID as the key field rather than using SFDC object ID and which requires populating that reference field with other Object's ID?. I need to use the existing ProductID as key.

Example: Implementing a simple JOIN in treditional DBMS systems

Select Oli.ProductID, Oli.ProductName, Oli.MfrID, OliEx.MfrName,OliEx.GroupCode

From OrderLineItems Oli

JOIN OrderLineItemsExt OliEx ON OliEx.ProductID=Oli.ProductID

Any thoughts?.....

When you create a custom object you have to give it a Record Name. If you set it to Text and then call Record Name "ProductID",  when you do a Lookup search of it on the OrderLineItems object, you are searching by the "Product ID".
