What is the correct syntax for making a workflow rule that updates a blank contact field to the corresponding account field

We have a custom object that is on the Account page now. When you create a new object, we call it "applications" from the account page, it automatically populates that account name, which we want. However, we also want it related to the correct contact. The correct contact ALWAYS is the one with the same name as the account name.  I believe the contact field is currently a lookup field, but was wondering if there was a way that as soon as a record is a created, if it sees that the value for contact is blank, (which inevitably it will be because it is not automated) that it will copy the information that is in the account field and put it in the contact field. Is that possible? Thank you for your help!

    Hi David - thanks for your response. I see I need to spend some time trying to figure this out and will revert with any questions. I thought I created a lookup filter on the particular custom object, but it didn't seem to do anything. Perhaps I need to make another custom field first as Bill described. I will play around with it a bit more and see.
