I'm dealing with very large datasets so I really don't have an option aside from incremental refresh. I'm publishing from a SQL server to Tableau Online. The data sources have filters applied to limit to necessary data and incremental refresh is set to be predicated upon an "Updated Date/Time" field so it only picks up new transactions.
The incremental refreshes have the automated refresh configured but never refresh. No error produced, not sure how to troubleshoot this. Now, interestingly I have had 1-2 successes (where they refresh) publishing the same dataset with different filters but the vast majority of the time the incremental refresh never runs.
What kinds of data source filters are you using? Is this definitely an incremental refresh problem or could it be a general refresh problem? Are you using Tableau Bridge so Tableau Cloud can access your SQL server if it is inside your firewall? Have you checked the Cloud stats on the refreshes?
