What is the difference between summary level filtering and record level filtering in Tableau? Can you be brief with an example? (might be an interview question).
Measures in Tableau are aggregated by default in Tableau when placed in the view or shelf. ( Ex: Sum (Sales), Sum (Profit), Avg (Sales), etc.,)
which can also be called aggregated data or summarized data. Applying a filter on aggregated data is called Summary level filtering.
Sub-category wise, sales > 50,000 in superstore data gives the aggregated sales data with respect to each sub-category and can be used as a summary level filter to identify which sub-categories have sales above 50,000.
Measures in Tableau can be disaggregated from the Analytics Tab->aggregated measure option, which can be termed as actual data or record level data (the lowest possible granularity of data, which cannot be further sliced).
The same example used above will not give any output because no individual sales data is more than 50,000. Let us assume a case of sales of over 10,000 for each sub-category.
Sales > 10,000 for each sub-category is added to the filter (record level filter), it will give the following output, as shown in the below image.
There might be more than one instance for each sub- category whose sales >10,000 because the data is at record level.
Sounds like it's DEFINITELY an interview question :(
Unfortunately if you're going for a Tableau role and you don't know the fundamental concepts like aggregate vs non-aggregate I don't think many people will help you here. We WILL assist with your continued learning, but we WON'T help you get through an exam or interview if you don't know the question (as in we won't answer the question for you).
Because your screenshots don't show the row & column shelf, it's impossible to understand how you created the chart.
