Lapsed donors and additional rollup fields potentially needed

Question

Hi there! I'm able to answer this question if I extract raw data from Salesforce and perform some processing, but I'm curious if there's a way to do the following type of report out-of-the-box with the standard NPSP rollup fields, or if additional custom rollup fields might be needed perhaps.

Given that a group of lapsed donors (let's say contacts who gave in 2018 but not 2019) was re-acquired in 2020 such that they gave in 2020, can we use standard rollup fields to filter and identify this group? Can we also filter on those who gave in 2017, not in 2018 and 2019, but returned in 2020?

I can use an Opportunity-based report and filter on donations made in 2018, apply a filter for Total Gifts Two Years Ago = 0 and Total Gifts Last Year not equal to 0 and that should give me a piece of the puzzle, but if I want to focus on donors who gave in 2017, didn't give in 2018 and 2019, but gave in 2020 - then I think I need to have additional rollup fields such as Total Gifts Three Years Ago, etc. Does that make sense?
